How to Prepare for Your Maternity Beach Photoshoot: A Cabo Photographer’s Guide

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative times in your life. It is a season of anticipation, change, and incredible beauty. But let’s be honest—sometimes, between the swollen ankles and the fatigue, you might not feel particularly magical.

As a specialized Cabo maternity photographer, my job is to remind you just how powerful and beautiful you look. And there is no better backdrop for this than the ocean. The rhythm of the waves and the natural elements create a stunning, editorial look that celebrates new life.

However, a great photo session doesn’t happen by accident. A little preparation goes a long way. Here is my guide on how to get ready for your maternity beach photoshoot in Cabo.

When is the Best Time to Schedule?

There is a "sweet spot" for maternity photos, usually between 28 and 34 weeks. This is when your bump is beautifully round and distinct, but you are typically still comfortable enough to move around, walk on the sand, and enjoy the experience.

But what if your vacation doesn't fall in that window? Don't worry! We can create beautiful images at any stage.
  • If you are earlier: We can focus on the intimate connection between you and your partner, capturing that "babymoon" excitement. And honestly, if you keep your hands on your belly during your maternity photo session—everybody will guess what is going on.
  • If you are later (35+ weeks): Just let your photographer know in advance because the logistics must be planned carefully. A location with easy beach access so you don’t have to walk far, and a restroom nearby are key factors to take into account. Your comfort is the priority.

What to Wear: Styling the Bump

Your outfit is the biggest factor in the "vibe" of your photos. Since it's an outdoor shoot, fabrics that work with the environment are the best.

Silhouette & Fabric For that high-end, editorial look, I love long, flowy dresses (long light kimono stile works best for maternity photoshoots!). The ocean breeze adds movement to the fabric, making the photos look dynamic and dreamlike. Alternatively, a form-fitting dress that hugs your curves is perfect for defining the silhouette of the bump.

Choosing Colors Cabo offers a stunning palette of beige sand and deep blue water. Earth tones, soft neutrals, creams, and whites always look timeless here. However, the perfect color really depends on your unique skin tone. If you are unsure, send a picture of your outfit options to your photographer before you pack. Personally, I am happy to provide feedback for my clients on which one will photograph best in our specific lighting.

A Note on Undergarments This is the most practical tip I can give you: wear nude, seamless underwear. Flash photography or bright sunlight can sometimes make fabrics slightly sheer, and we want the focus to remain on you, not your panty lines.

Hair and Makeup for the Beach

Professional hair and makeup can make a huge difference in your confidence, but shooting on a beach in Mexico comes with its own set of rules.

The "Cabo Glow" vs. The Heat It is warm here, and often humid. While professional makeup looks fantastic, keep in mind that most makeup artists do not accompany us to the actual beach location for touch-ups. Once we are out on the sand, the heat might make your skin shine more than you want. I highly recommend bringing a small touch-up kit with you. A compact powder, a sponge, or blotting papers are lifesavers to quickly mat down any sweat or shine between shots.

Hairstyling Embrace the wind! It is almost always breezy by the ocean. Stiff, heavily sprayed hairstyles often fight against the wind and can look messy. Loose waves or styles that have movement tend to look much more natural and romantic.

Including Your Partner and Family

If this isn't your first baby, or if you want your partner involved, the goal is "coordination," not "matching."

You don’t need to put everyone in white t-shirts and jeans (in fact, please don't!). Instead, look for colors that complement your dress. If you are wearing a soft cream dress, your partner might look great in tan linen pants and a light sage or blue shirt. Keep the fabrics natural—linen and cotton are great because they look relaxed and breathable.
